DVD places limits on PGR4

Sony’s mantra that ‘only Blu-Ray provides the storage needed for next-gen gaming’ may be the fanboys’ weapon of choice on countless internet forums, but Project Gotham Racing 4 developer Bizarre Creations has admitted that it has had to cut features in its upcoming racer due to the limited size of the DVD format.

CVG reports that speaking on Bizarre’s official forum, a spokesman claimed: You won’t see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn’t a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD.”

Though some pretty clever lighting techniques mean that the in-game experience will not be significantly affected, it could be an indication that an alternative storage solution will be needed from Microsoft in the future.
