Athletes and eSports: Why Visas Are Complicated

Finally.

After many months of being barred from competition, TSM has announced that Leffen has received a temporary P1 Visa that grants him access to the United States. This is great news for Melee fans, but one that comes as a bit of a surprise. Why now, when not before? The answer isn’t completely clear — but the trials that Leffen has been put through are sadly not unique to him.

Immigration law is complicated; this is a statement that will come as a surprise to very few. Why it is so complicated, however, is not as obvious. We sat down with Joe Adams, a lawyer who specializes in entertainment and immigration law, to talk about the unique scenario that eSports professionals can find themselves in during the process.
