EVO organising its first Japanese event

Fighting game tournament EVO is organising a spin off event known as EVO Japan.

The competition will unsurprisingly take place in Japan, although no specific location or dates were revealed. More information on the event is set to be announced at the Tokyo Games Show, which takes place in September.

The announcement was made just before the Street Fighter V finals at this year’s EVO, with both Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono and Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada being on stage to help make the announcement. Their involvement with the reveal would suggest that both Street Fighter and Tekken will be featured at the Japanese event.

This is of course not the first time EVO has tried to venture over to Japan. Back in 2010 EVO was planning an event in the county, but it was postponed indefinitely due to the Tohoku Earthquakes.

Last weekends EVO event featured the biggest ever single location fighting game tournament in the form of the Street Fighter V competition. This was also broadcast on ESPN2, although it failed to beat the viewership numbers on Twitch.
