Female football stars get FIFA 16 cover role in US, Canada and Australia

US, Canadian and Australian copies of FIFA 16 will feature prominent female footballers on the cover.

The women’s game features in EA’s title for the first time this year. Reflecting this, Portland Thorns pair Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair will feature on the US and Canadian covers respectively while the Australian edition will feature their teammate Steph Catley, who won a public vote.

All three will star alongside Lionel Messi, who is the co-cover star in all regions.

It’s a shame, however, that EA has in the UK opted against including a female co-star, with vote winner Jordan Henderson instead featuring.

It’s not as if we’re short on high-profile England players to choose from, either – Lucy Bronze, who scored a belter against Norway in the knockout stages of the World Cup last month, Birmingham LFC’s Jade Moore, Liverpool’s Fara Williams (who netted three goals in the tournament last month) or England captain Steph Houghton seem like excellent candidates.

"It is an incredible honour to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA Sports’ FIFA," Morgan said of her US cover role. "I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer. And now to share the cover with today’s greatest player is surreal."
