Id’s Rage franchise will return

2011 release Rage enjoyed mixed success both critically and commercially, but Id co-founder Tim Willits insists the series is set for a return.

"I’m proud of what we did, I’m proud of the universe that we built. The franchise is not dead," Willits told Joystiq. "We’re not doing anything immediately with it, but when I designed the universe, I designed it in such a way that it would be easy to step back into.

I’m still proud that we did something that was different – it wasn’t like the games that we’ve done in the past."

The Rage publishing rights were acquired by ZeniMax in 2009. Before then EA had been lined up to publish the game, but the Bethesda owner was keen to bring it in-house having acquired Id earlier that year.

Despite some early issues that saw Id’s Carmack himself describe the launch as a real clusterfuck”, the game debuted at No.2 in the UK charts and was the best performing new IP in the second half of 2011.
