IGN selling Direct2Drive to Gamefly

IGN is in the process of selling digital distributor Direct2Drive to US online rental firm Gamefly, MCV understands.

An official announcement isn’t expected until next week, but sources have told us the deal is almost complete.

Gamefly is a major US online rental games firm, similar to LoveFilm in the UK. Direct2Drive recently launched a digital rental service, which would tie-in with Gamefly’s postal offering.

Direct2Drive is one of the biggest competitors to Valve’s Steam download service. It has a presence throughout the US, in the UK and throughout Europe.

The deal follows IGN’s recent acquisition of 1UP parent UGO.

IGN was unavailable for comment at the time of posting this story.
