IGN’s People Choice Award breaks voting records

258,367 gamers voted in IGN’s People’s Choice Award, breaking records for the most individuals voting for a games award.

Valve’s Dota 2 won the prize, which saw players choose their game of Gamescom 2011. The incredible number of voters will mean it goes into the Guinness Word Records – Gamers Edition.

IGN says that the achievement sees it ‘overtake other gaming awards ceremonies that attract a larger total number of votes due to their multi-category format, but deliver a far smaller number of gamers taking part.’

Digital PC game Dota 2 got its first public unveiling at Gamescom and combines online RTS and RPG gaming. An international tournament took place on the show floor.

"Dota 2 is a deserving winner for our first-ever IGN People’s Choice Award – it really captured the imagination of fans on the show floor and hundreds of thousands more around the world," said UK editor-in-chief Alex Simmons.

Other games that came highly recommended included Battlefield 3, Diablo III, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Guild Wars II.
