Kojima wants Metal Gear Solid 5 characters to be "more erotic" to sell figures

The famed creator of Metal Gear Solid wants to infuse some extra sex appeal into his next game.

Speaking on Twitter, Hideo Kojima admitted to ordering his designers to make some of the game’s characters more erotic” in order to generate additional figure sales and encourage cosplayers.

I’ve been ordering to Yoji to make the character more erotic, and he did it well,” he wrote. Recently I’ve been making characters this way. I create the setting thoroughly, how he/she spent early life, name, style, favourite phrase, fashion, action to stand the character out. The initial target is to make u want to do cosplay or its figurine to sell well.”

He then posted the following image:

The notion of sex selling a product is hardly new – it’s one of the oldest staples of advertising. But this is 2013 and gender equality is thankfully one of the more prominent issues faced by the modern games market.

Does Kojima’s open admission of the quest for eroticism simply demonstrate commercial savvy? Or is it yet another example of developers languishing in the past and failing to grasp that an increasing number of gamers demand more than simply some tits and arse from their 50 game investments?
