Game publisher Kongregate has announced a new $10m initiative to help fund promising indie titles on PC and console. The move continues Kongregate’s expansion into cross-platform publishing and will include both paid and free-to-play titles.
The fund will provide independent developers with customised marketing, financial assistance and production support, as well as platform relationship management, game analytics and performance benchmarking, expo presence at major and local developer events, design and build consulting and QA certification support.
Kongregate launched its first original title, Gridd: Retroenhanced, on Steam and Xbox One in May earlier this year, and will be following it this summer with a pair of titles, Peter Molyneux’s The Trail: Frontier Challenge and Bome Games’ Super Fancy Pants Adventure, which is based on the popular web game franchise.
This isn’t the first time the publisher has announced such a fund, however, as it also created a $10m fund back in 2013 to launch its own publishing arm for mobile titles. To date, more than 30 games have been published through this fund, including AdVenture Capitalist, Battlehand, The Trail and Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards, which have together garnered over 100m downloads.
Kongregate CEO and co-founder Emily Greer commented: We want to bring great games to gamers around the world, no matter what platform they play on. We started as a web platform for flash games, expanded into publishing mobile games with great success and want to continue that momentum for both PC and console publishing. We want indie developers to know that we will support them on any platform they choose to launch their games on, and will work with them to identify which platforms and audiences will be the best fit.”
