League of Legends World Championship draws 40,000 fans

An audience of approximately 40,000 eSports fans were in attendance at the recently concluded League of Legends finals in Seoul, South Korea.

The BBC reports Seoul’s World Cup Stadium was filled to capacity for the final match between Star Horn Royal Club and eventual winning team Samsung White – which split the $1m grand prize between its five members.

The events year-to-year growth has been impressive as well. Games Industry notes the 2013 World Championships at the Staples Center in Los Angeles saw less than half of this year’s high-water mark, with just 18,000 in attendance (capacity for the venue). 2012’s event saw just 8,000 tickets sold at the Galen Center in LA.

League of Legends developer Riot Games has yet to reveal numbers regarding online viewers, but last year’s total reached 32m.
