Leisure Suit Larry resurrected once again

Replay Games has acquired the global rights to the Leisure Suit Larry franchise.

It intends to release HD remakes of a number of the series’ original titles and, if that goes well, possibly go on to release some new LSL games. Replay has even hired Larry’s original creator Al Lowe.

We originally hooked players with the concept of a naughty game that was unusual and not found anywhere else,” Lowe told VentureBeat. They stayed and liked the games because they were funny. My goal is to make it funny, and there is a sore lack of humour today in video games.

While it’s hard to envisage any sort of market appeal for the Leisure Suit Larry games in the modern market, the series has sold in excess of 10m units to date.

Let’s not forget, though, that a relaunch of the series was attempted in 2009. Much to the distain of critics around the world.

Nobody would do a deal with me,” Replay chief exec Paul Trowe said of his long-term attempts to resurrect the franchise. ”But this is a coup as far as I’m concerned. I wouldn’t make this game without Al.I watched the franchise dissipate and get watered down. It was not fun to watch. One of them thought it was all about creating basketball breasts. That wasn’t it at all. Paul said he would get the rights and I wanted to redeem my creation.”

The first game of this new partnership, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards HD, will be released in Q4 2012.
