Legendary confirms eSports film starring Will Ferrell

The worlds of Hollywood and eSports are to collide in a new comedy starring Will Ferrell.

Legendary has confirmed an untiled movie based around the joke that Ferrell, who is 49, feels like an old man in a sector that is dominated by youngsters. The studio describes his character as an anomaly in a sport where players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination”.

Ferrell has played the role of unlikely sportman before in the likes of Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

It’s not yet known what games will feature, although League of Legends and Dota 2 are both mentioned in the official blurb. Members of eSports teams Fnatic and Evil Geniuses are in talks about possible cameos in the film, according to ESPN.

This project is being penned by SpongeBob SquarePants 3 duo Michael Kvamme and Jordan Dunn, with Gary Sanchez and Mosaic producing. Universal will act as distributor.

Legendary recently signed on to produce a movie based on the Detective Pikachu franchise.
