Microsoft to confirm job cuts this week, report says

Something in the region of 6,000 job cuts could to be announced at Microsoft later this week, a report has claimed.

Bloomberg says that the losses will target areas in which Microsoft and Nokia overlap, as well as marketing and engineering. The site cites the company’s 5,800 job cuts in 2009, saying that those numbers may be surpassed this time around.

It then states that some” of the cuts will come from Xbox’s global marketing team, mentioning Microsoft’s European HQ in Reading specifically. Software testing will also reportedly be impacted.

An anonymous source has separately told MCV that Xbox in Reading will be significantly impacted” with an internal announcement to be made on Thursday. The source added that staff will be asked to reapply for jobs as part of a global Xbox restructure of sales, marketing and development.

The company currently employs 127,104 employees.

If true, the cuts come less than a week after CEO Satya Nadella announced a fresh focus on mobile and cloud computing.

Microsoft has so far declined the chance to comment, directing MCV to its UK press line.
