Minecraft film set for 2019 release

Mojang has revealed that the Minecraft film is launching in just under three years.

In a post on the developer’s website, COO Vu Bui announced that the film will be hitting the silver screen on May 24th, 2019. Furthermore, the flick will be coming out in 3D and Imax, too.

Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame is handling directing duties. The film is also being made in collaboration with Warner Bros Animation, the studio that helped create The LEGO Movie.

Already this year we have had two other video game films, The Angry Birds Movie and Ratchet & Clank, while Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed gets the silver screen treatment at the end of 2016.

With its widespread appeal, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a Minecraft movie become one of the most successful video game films ever. That title currently belongs to Warcraft: The Beginning due to strong ticket sales in China. Upcoming video game films also include Five Nights at Freddy’s and three, yes, THREE Tetris movies.

Minecraft has sold over 100m units to date. And speaking of China, Mojang recently signed a deal with local firm NetEase to release a ‘bespoke’ version of Minecraft for the region.
