Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition reaches 12m units sold

The phenomenon that is Minecraft shows no sign of letting up.

It has been confirmed that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition – a more or less permanent fixture in the UK Top Ten – has now sold over 12m units, elevating it right to the top of the best-ever selling Xbox 360 game pile.

It is pretty amazing,” Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan said on the Xbox blog. I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell one million copies. That would have put us on par with Battlefield 1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for.

We never even dreamed of selling 12 million.”

Eurogamer adds that the game’s total sales now stand at over 40m – with 14.7m sales on PC, over 10m across iOS and Android and at least 1m on PS3.

The PS3 version was released late last year. Mojang hopes to announce release dates for the game in development on both PS4 and Xbox One soon.
