Google Play downloads tracking 45% ahead of Apple App Store

A new report says that total Google Play downloads are currently tracking ahead of the Apple App Store in terms of volume.

Google Play downloads lead the App Store by 45 per cent in Q1 2014, up from 35 per cent in Q4 2013.

However, App Annie’s Q1 2014 Market Index says that iOS still generates in the region of 85 per cent more revenue than its Android rival, although the gap is narrowing.

China is helping iOS maintain its revenue lead, however, with revenues in the country climbing 70 per cent quarter over quarter. Mexico and Turkey, meanwhile, have provided good growth for Google Play, jumping by 75 per cent.

The UK remains the fourth largest iOS downloader in terms of both units and revenue. It also ranks fifth in the Google Play revenue table but doesn’t feature in the units top five.

Games remains the top performing category in all respects across Google Play and iOS.
