Gree adopts HTML5 for web apps

Gree is expanding its HTML5 compatibility for its mobile platform, enabling developers to distribute games as web apps to users around the world.

The enhanced HTML5 functionality will be rolled out globally in open beta this November.

The social gaming company is introducing the expanded functionality in response to the evolution of the smartphone industry and its related businesses.

“The emergence of new web app development environments such as HTML5 enable true cross-platform development of web apps compatible across multiple smartphone operating systems,” said the company in its statement.

“By expanding the compatibility of the Gree Platform, developers will be able to choose the development method that best suits their technical capabilities and the characteristics of each game, providing them with a cost-effective means of distributing games worldwide.”

Coinciding with the expanded HTML5 compatibility, Gree is introducing web browser optimised functionality for the its social networking service, which is now available in 14 languages.

The company also plans to launch its own in-house social games as web apps.

New payment options will become available to users around the world, with payment via PayPal, VISA, MasterCard, JCB and American Express; and payment from up to 166 mobile carriers.
