Samsung Galaxy S8 breaks S7 records

It appears that Samsung has not been badly damaged by the Galaxy Note 7 scandal.

Analysts had speculated that the Korean tech giant may find it hard to recover from the infamous recall of last year’s Note 7, which was recalled after some handsets burst into flames. It was later discovered that insufficient space for battery swell was the culprit.

However, the recent release of the Galaxy S8 has certainly not suffered as a result. Samsung has confirmed that pre-orders for the handset were up 30 per cent compared to its predecessor the S7. As that was at the time Samsung’s fastest selling smartphone, it means a new company record has been set.

We don’t yet have hard numbers so direct comparisons with the iPhone 7 are hard to pin down.

The only fly in the ointment for the S8 thus far is a problem with a red tint on some user’s screens. Samsung initially said that the issue can be addressed with a manual screen calibration, but has now confirmed plans to roll out an update to fix the issue directly.

"The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are equipped with Super AMOLED displays to provide rich, expressive colours and optimal colour range, saturation and sharpness depending on the environment,” a statement said. In the past, we have received feedback that consumers wanted the ability to customize the colour setting of their Galaxy devices due to natural variations in displays, and we provided the option to do so in previous software updates.

While the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have the ability for the user to modify the colour of the display, Samsung has listened to feedback and has decided to release a software update as early as next week which will provide customers with a further enhanced ability to adjust the colour setting to their preference."
