New dev headed up by Wooga veteran Wilhelm Oesterberg, first title is mobile strategy game Warlords

Wooga opens Black Anvil Games, targets core gamers

Casual games firm Wooga has opened a brand new studio, Black Anvil Games.

Based in Berlin, this new outfit will be somewhat different to Wooga’s other internal studios, focusing on creating games for a core audience rather than adding to the firm’s casual portfolio.

The first title will be Warlords, a mobile strategy game due for release this summer. Warlords aims to shake up the genre by giving players direct control over their armies and offering more tactical options.

Black Anvil Games will be led by Head of Studio Wilhelm Oesterberg, who previously ran another internal Wooga studio for five years.

“Building a brand that gamers can relate to will help Black Anvil Games establish itself in a very competitive segment of mobile games,” said Wooga founder and CEO Jens Begemann. “While the team will have full access to Wooga’s proven expertise in terms of go-to-market, the studio can focus solely on creating full-on core gaming experiences on mobile.”
