Mouse and keyboard support headed to Xbox One in coming months

Xbox One players may have a new means of controlling games in the very near future.

When asked by PCGamesN about the need to close the gap between PC and Microsoft’s consoles thanks to its Play Anywhere cross-buy scheme, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that mouse and keyboard support on Xbox One was just months away.

Spencer said that keyboards already work with the console’s development kits, with mouse support incoming. The exec clarified that this is months away, not years.

Xbox Play Anywhere was a new feature announced during Microsoft’s press event. Play Anywhere games will be released on both Xbox One and Window 10.

When we enable PC and mouse on console it’ll be interesting to see how many of those creators think about running their PC and mouse-only game on console, and then this idea of Play Anywhere might get even more interesting for those guys,” Spencer said.

I think the ship dates being close together is going to be important for Play Anywhere, I think the ‘go to market’ muscle around ‘Hey, they’re all available now, go get them’, and keeping the features and updates in sync will be important.”

He continued: I keep talking about [PC and mouse] in the press and my platform team keeps shaking their head, because they… Truthfully in our dev kit modes now keyboard works, mouse support is a little bit further away. I say it because I know it’s not years away, it’s more like months away, but we don’t have an exact date yet.”
