Next console Zelda will be ‘something new’

Nintendo’s in-development console Zelda title will reinvent the series in much the same way Ocarina of Time did.

That’s according to series producer Eiji Aonuma, who has told Famitsu – as reported by Kotaku – that development is ticking along nicely.

The game has really taken shape, and things have gotten easier. That means things are progressing well,” he explained. I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavour will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised.

Please look forward to it, because I think we’ll be able to make ‘something new’ like Ocarina of Time was.”

Zelda for Wii U was at one stage due out in 2015 before in March being pushed back to this year. Despite some concerns that the wait could be even longer, Nintendo has insisted that 2016 remains very much the year.

The big question, though, is for which format the game will be released. There doesn’t seem to be any suggestion that it will skip the struggling Wii U, but a cross-platform release on the NX no seems increasingly likely.
