Nintendo: ‘3DS is approaching 3m sales in Japan’

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes the 3DS is about to cross the 3m sales mark in Japan and will reach a 4m milestone by April.

Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by Andriasang, Iwata said the 3DS has regained its vigour” thanks to the price drop and major new releases such as Mario Kart 7 hitting shelves. The racer sold 420,000 units in its first week in Japan – double that of the DS version.

If Iwata is correct, the Nintendo 3DS will reach its 3m sales mark two weeks ahead of the original DS.

Earlier this month Nintendo announced the 3DS had sold over 2.37m units across the world since going on sale in March this year. UK stores have reported a sharp increase in 3DS sales in the run up to Christmas.
