Nintendo approached Burnout dev Criterion to make F-Zero game

The Wii U was meant to launch with a new F-Zero title when it came out in 2012.

That’s according to Nintendo Life, who reports that Burnout developer Vriterion was approached by Nintendo to make a new entry in the fast-paced sci-fi racer in 2011.

The plan was for Nintendo to show off a new F-Zero on-stage at E3, with the objective being to show a vertical gameplay slice. But Criterion was too busy working on Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

The last entry in the F-Zero series outside of Japan was F-Zero GP Legend of the Game Boy Advance.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said in 2013 that he had simply run out of ideas for the series. Since the platform holder has released F-Zero-themed DLC for Mario Kart 8.
