PlayStation revenues down 18%

Sony has joined fellow platform holder Nintendo is posting year-on-year sales declines for its financial quarter ending June 30th, with revenues in its PlayStation business down 18 per cent year-on-year.

Revenues for the recently formed Network Product and Services Division, which houses both the PlayStation business and its Walkman operations, suffered an annual sales decline of 37.4 per cent.

Surprisingly, the ever-popular PS2 was Sony’s only machine to enjoy a year-on-year sales increase, with its 1.6m unit sales up on the 1.5m units shifted in the same period in 2008. That it outsold PS3 is certainly notable.

Both PS3 and PSP saw annual sales declines in the period, with the home console selling 1.1m units (down from 1.6m last year) and the handheld 1.3m units (down from 3.6m).

The firm blamed the numbers on the rising value of the Yen.
