PS3 launch was a baptism under fire

SCEA president Jack Tretton has told MCV that the launch of PlayStation 3 was one of the toughest periods of his career so far.

In the second of MCV’s new regular series of ‘MCV Legends’, the top Sony exec revealed that the media storm and weight of expectation surrounding the new console was a real test for the company – but he remains focused on contining to boost the industry’s spectacular growth through his role at SCEA.

There was a lot of concern about the technology promise of the PS3 as well as the price point. Consumers questioned whether Sony would be able to deliver on that promise. The first year was certainly a baptism under fire.

Previously, I managed just a portion of the business. Now, I’m responsible for all of it, so I feel a tremendous amount of of responsibility for viritually everything the company does. I would like to show long-term growth and success at the most senior levels.”
