PS3 will support 400GB Blu-ray discs

Technology firm Pioneer has confirmed that its 16-layer Blu-ray disc, which boasts a storage capacity of 400GB, is heading into production – and more importantly, it will be compatible with current Blu-ray players such as the PS3.

Existing single layer discs boast 25GB of space, and 50GB duel-layer discs are also commonplace. But Pioneer’s innovation paves the way for a massive capacity boost – and compatibility with PS3 will be good news for developers.

The new discs are scheduled to go into production in 2010, and the firm expects that it will begin manufacturing 1TB discs in 2013.
