Eric Hirshberg calls new handheld gaming generation a â??double edged swordâ??

Activision wary of mobile games focus

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has made wary public comments about the relevance of iOS and mobile gaming, and reinforced the position that Activision is primarily a core games studio.

Talking to the New York Times, he described a cautious view of the iTunes app store.

"There are 400,000 apps in the iTunes app store, I don’t want to be number 400,001,” he said.

"What we’re trying to do is use new technologies and new devices in gaming to strengthen our core business. We don’t just want to go and spread our roulette chips around the table."

Hirshberg pointed to services like Call of Duty Elite as an example of the more likely cross-platform process Activision would look into.
