Server issues lead retailer to temporarily halt digital sales

Amazon posts SimCity warning

So many customers have experienced issues with the SimCity server that Amazon has added a warning to its webpage for the game.

EA has controversially made the game accessible only when online, and server issues similar to those experienced by purchasers of Blizzard’s Diablo III last summer have resulted in a massive backlash.

The game is currently given a one star rating on Amazon, but has a decent Metacritic rating of 82 percent.

"Many customers are having issues connecting to the "SimCity" servers," reads the warning.

"EA is actively working to resolve these issues, but at this time we do not know when the issue will be fixed."

The issues were so severe that Amazon briefly stopped sales of the downloadable version of the game, reports Games Industry International.

Some have demanded refunds for the game, a request EA has refused.

Many regard the future of games as being digital only, and many publishers are taking the always-online stance as a means of stopping piracy.

Many games purchased over Steam cannot be played unless customers log in to their account.

This may be only a brief hiccup for EA, but similar incidents with other games from a variety of publishers are certainly adding to growing consumer anger over online-only requirements.
