â??Proactive Govtâ?? persuaded Ubisoft Toronto deal

Canada’s “proactive” Ontario government was influential in the formation of Ubisoft’s new Toronto studio.

That’s according to Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat (pictured), the experienced industry exec who will overlook the new studio – along with Jade Raymond – when it opens in a matter of months.

And at a time when the UK games industry is challenging its own government to show more commitment to the games industry, Mallat tells Develop that such dedication can result in landmark deals.

“The decision for Ubisoft to open a studio in Toronto was based on a few different factors,” he said. “First of all, as it was the case in Montreal and Quebec, the government of the Province of Ontario was dedicated to develop the industry in the Toronto area. They have been central in the whole process with their willingness and proactivity.”

As part of Develop’s profile of the new Toronto outfit – which you can read here – Mallat explains that the studio was also given the green light due to the surrounding pools of young industry talent.

“Toronto also has some key universities and colleges that have been training video game experts over the last few years," he said.

"We are convinced that Toronto represents a very strong potential of growth and to contribute to Ubisoft’s global growth.”

Back in July, Ubisoft announced it was building a new Toronto studio, claiming it will create 800 new jobs within the province over the next 10 years.

The government of Ontario is investing CA$263 million ($248m) in the business, while Ubisoft will invest over CAD$500 million ($473m).
