E3 2010: Double-SKU for Xbox Kinect?

And the news just keeps tumbling out about Microsoft’s Kinect.

While as we post this Microsoft execs and half the industry is milling into the LA Galen Center to see the format-holder’s Cirque du Soleil spectacular unveiling the device, details about the device keep leaking out.

The latest report claims that the device – previously known as Project Natal – will be released as two different SKUs at different price points. And the most expensive is $189 (129).

That’s after an Italian ad outed the name of the camera as Kinect.

And after USA Today confirmed the name – and revealed a number of games.

VG247 only says its source is ‘close’ to the Natal project. The report says the more expensive version of the camera features a motorised base, suggesting the cheaper version simply lacks that function.

The price of Kinect has been a point of some speculation. And it still is.

Last year when Microsoft was touring Europe with the camera, it was telling publishers that the device would be around 50 – since then, however, it’s presumed that component costs have changed in the run-up to full production this summer.

Either that, or the second SKU will still boast a friendlier price point.

More news is expected at E3 in LA later this week.
