E3 2016: Microsoft’s Project Scorpio has 8 CPU cores and 6 TFLOPS of power

Microsoft closed its E3 2016 press conference by confirming the rumoured Project Scorpio, the next evolution of the Xbox One console.

The new device is optimised for virtual reality and the ultra high-definition games, with the platform holder’s Phil Spencer describing it as “the next step-change for gamers and developers”.

As previously reported, it will offer six teraflops of power, but we now also know it will include eight CPU cores, a new GPU and is capably of 320GB per second of memory bandwidth.

It is due to ship next year.

“We’re announcing this today to give our developers and partners the opportunity to take full advantage of this now,” said Spencer.

He claimed that when it launches, Project Scorpio will be the “most powerful console ever”. But he stressed that all games for Scorpio would still be compatible with Xbox One and the newly-announced, slimmer Xbox One S.

“No one gets left behind,” he declared.

Developers, what do you think of the new console? Will you be building games for it? Let us know by emailing James via jbatchelor@nbmedia.com.
