First project to be part-funded by Creative England

Ex-FreeStyle devs form virtual reality studio Viewpoint Games

Two former FreeStyle developers have opened a new studio in Warwickshire called Viewpoint Games.

The developer will focus on developing titles for virtual reality platforms. Its as yet unannounced debut project will be part-funded by Creative England.

Viewpoint is led by former FreeStyle senior games designer Neil Wigfield, who takes on the role of design director, and ex-FreeStyle lead programmer Neil Campbell, who takes the position of technical director.

“We started Viewpoint Games as we feel that VR is the most unique change to the game industry to happen over the last few years,” Campbell told Develop.

“It’s not just more polygons, bigger textures or higher frame rate, it’s a fundamental shift in how the player interacts with the games they play.

“We currently have one project at prototype stage which we are keen to announce in the near future. The project is part-funded by Creative England as we felt they could provide us with a network of expertise and support for the long-term.

“Between us, we have 30 years experience in the game industry working on a variety of titles including triple-A products such as DJ Hero, but we felt that now was the right time to split away from our previous roles in order to be part of the leading wave of VR development.”
