Gamescom shakes up mobile space, awards show

The organisers behind Gamescom have announced it has made some key changes to the event’s awards show and mobile space this year.

In addition to the console, handheld and PC sections, the mobile gaming section is expected to be overhauled to reflect the growth of the apps business.

Apps will play an important role this year – for the iPhone and the Apple product family as well as for devices using the Android operating system,” said Olaf Wolters, CEO at Gamescom partners the BUI, the German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software.

Meanwhile, the Awards will now serve as Gamescom’s opening event on Wednesday, August 17th. Prizes will be spread across various categories, covering both hardware and software.

Gamescom 2011 will be held at Cologne’s Kolnmesse between August 17th and August 21st.
