Microsoft awarded $15m in Motorola patent case

A jury has awarded Microsoft $15m in damages following a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Motorola.

The suit, which was first filed by the telecommunications company in 2010, claimed Microsoft had infringed upon five different patents.

Four of those five alleged infringements were quietly dismissed over the past few years. The fifth dealt with peer-to-peer communication between two wireless devices, and became the major focus of the case for the past couple years.

ITC Judge David Shaw ruled in favor of Motorola in 2012, famously pushing for an Xbox import ban in the US before the ITC remanded his decision.

After the ruling was put in front of an administrative law judge for a second look, the suit went through the process again and Shaw this time ruled in Microsoft’s favor.

Motorola representative William Moss stated to The Seattle Times that the company was disappointed” by the latest result, but looks forward to an appeal of the novel legal issues raised in this case.”
