Mythic not shutting down from EA layoffs

US-based EA studio Mythic has assured it will “remain committed” to its operations in the wake of EA’s latest round of layoffs.

In an open letter, the studio’s executive producer Jeff Hickman implied that any purported EA staff cuts had not closed the studio down.

“With all that is going on within Mythic Entertainment and EA, I would like to take a moment to reinforce the studio’s dedication to both our games and our players,” he said.

“At Mythic, we remain committed to our games and the passionate people who play them – we’re going to continue to deliver the content and service that keeps you playing.”

EA announced on Monday that it would be slashing 1500 jobs from its global workforce, of which 900 developer jobs will be made redundant.

Mythic, which develops titles such as Ultima Online and Warhammer Online, is thought to be heavily affected by the layoffs.

It had been suggested that EA had let go of 80 of Mythic’s staff, or “about 40% of its employees”. Such claims have not been confirmed by EA, who declined to comment when approached by Develop.

Mythic’s Hickman remained positive in the wake of EA’s announcement.

“We want to assure our community that we will maintain the same high level of customer support you’ve come to expect,” he said, “and continue to improve our games with an exciting schedule of patches, live events and new content.”

In June this year, Mythic merged with EA-owned studio BioWare. However, the deal meant that a number of redundancies occurred to the business, along with the high-profile departure of former studio head Mark Jacobs.

EA had cut jobs from Mythic previously in January.
