Steam rival grows with 21 partnerships signed

Origin peaks at 1m active users

Electronic Arts’ digital PC platform, Origin, has peaked at one million simultaneous users, the publisher has revealed.

The games portal has accrued 9.3 million registered users since launching seven months ago in June. EA has gradually built content on the service, having signed partnerships with the likes of Warner Bros Interactive, THQ and Capcom.

This week EA announced several other publisher and developer agreements, bringing Origin’s client base to 21 games companies. The portal has generated more than $100 million in total sales.

Valve’s rival digital games platform, Steam, has accrued 40 million registered users since launching in 2003. On January 2nd Valve passed a concurrent user milestone with five million customers logged in at the same time.

“The momentum that we’ve achieved with Origin since launching in June has been incredible, buoyed by great games and great partners,” said Origin VP David DeMartini.

“Our fast-growing user base demonstrates the interest from gamers across the world in fully-connected, 365-day digital game experiences. We’re committed to evolving and expanding Origin to help players get the absolute most out of their games, and we’re just getting started.”
