PlayStation Plus boasts 7.9m subscribers

Sony’s PlayStation Plus service has climbed to 7.9m members, the company has confirmed.

The firm revealed the figure during a post-earnings conference call with international investors earlier this week, following Sony’s earlier announcement that its PlayStation 4 hardware had reached 13.5m sales worldwide.

It’s not clear how the number breaks down among available platforms – though Games Industry notes that earlier this year Sony CEO Kaz Hirai claimed approximately half of PS4 owners had signed up.

PS Plus is required for online multiplayer in most premium priced (not free-to-play) PS4 games, but not for PS3, PS Vita or PlayStation TV titles. The PSN service provides users on all platforms access to exclusive discounts, free downloadable offerings, and cloud storage for game saves.
