PSN exceeds 20m registered accounts

Sony has announced that its PlayStation Network now boasts over 20 million registered accounts, successfully establishing it as a robust network business platform”.

It has taken two years and three months to reach the milestone, and expansion has been accelerating. After one year and two months PSN’s user base stood at five million and by 20 months it had hit ten million. Seven million have been added in the last seven months.

On the hardware front, PS3 sales now total 21.3m worldwide, and PSP sales passed the 50m mark last month.

Some further stats were also announced – over 600 games with online features have now been released for PS3, and PSN itself now hosts over 14,500 pieces of downloadable digital content. To date over 380m pieces of content have been downloaded, with sales reaching $180m.

In addition, having gone live with its beta last December Sony’s PlayStation Home service now boasts four million users.
