Epic's engine to licensed for stadium design in the US

UE3 to aid architects

‘Alternative’ licensees continue to step up to use Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, with the latest being architecture firm HKS, which will use the tool for visualisation and design of stadiums in the US.

Epic VP Mark Rein has revealed the signing in his monthly Develop slot, The Epic Diaries, which offers updates on all the latest developments for the firm’s game engine.

The news follows confirmation that an animation team at Warner Bros was using the engine for use in a new TV series.

HKS creates functional 3D visualisations of architectural space complete with moving figures, operational elevators and running escalators. The firm used the engine to show what the new $1 billion Dallas Cowboys stadium looked like before building began. HKS is also working with the likes of W Hotels to visualise new buildings via UE3.

"HKS is the first architectural firm to apply Unreal Engine 3 technology to its designs,” said Ralph Hawkins, president and CEO of HKS. “We are pleased to offer our clients the sophisticated tools contained in this unique program, which allows us to powerfully portray our designs through its versatility and strength."
