Job listing for industrial designer says company 'frustrated by lack of progress'

Valve hiring for hardware project

A job listing on Valve’s website says the company is ready to step up to the plate and begin shaping the hardware the industry depends on.

Valve has been more active with hardware in recent months, and has generated a good deal of press with its in-house wearable computing prototype.

The post describes the position as working with product design, ergnomics, and manufacturing, which is the first offical word the company is considering the release of their own hardware for retail.

"Valve is traditionally a software company," says the entry.

"Open platforms like the PC and Mac are important to us, as they enable us and our partners to have a robust and direct relationship with customers."

"We’re frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space though, so we’re jumping in."

Valve founder Gabe Newell made a stir this summer by talking about his company’s strategy to prepare itself for the next wave of innovation.

Aside from announcing the company was going to push linux development, Newell also spent a good amount of time talking about interfaces.

"Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven’t really changed in any meaningful way over the years," continues the job posting.

"There’s a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user experiences are being overlooked."

By the looks of it, the company behind Steam is planning on making the next big leap in hardware.

Whatever Valve has planned, it’s sure to be big news for the PC space.
