Valve confirms its sending its virtual reality headset out into the wild

Vive VR developer kits now shipping

Developers selected to receive a dev kit for the new Vive VR headset should be receiving them soon.

Valve announced that it has started shipping the Vive Developer Editions via the Steam website, having opened applications for the hardware back in April.

Hinting at the variety of companies that will soon get theirs hands on the tech, Valve wrote: “This first wave includes a wide range of developers from major movie studios, triple-A developers, to small indie teams working on their first title. We will continue to ship to additional developers through the spring and summer.”

Vive VR is a joint venture between the Steam firm and mobile giant HTC. It was announced at GDC and is expected to be on shelves by Christmas.

Dev kits are free to developers, but only those selected from a list of studios who have applied.
