‘We have PSP2 in the house’

It was MIA at E3. There was no sign of it at Gamescom. And all hope of a Tokyo Game Show reveal was scuppered this week when Sony’s press event came and went without even the faintest whiff of new hardware. So where is PSP2?

By the sounds of it, it’s in the hands of Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat team

We have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support,” Shaun Himmerick, Netherrealm Studios’ executive producer working on Warner Bros’ upcoming Mortal Kombat title, told Industry Gamers.

Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is.”

The site goes on to speculate that the fact Himmerick has his hands on PSP2 and not the fully revealed and not-far-off Nintendo 3DS could point to a launch for the device sooner than we might expect.

This isn’t the first time a developer has claimed to be working with the new machine. Last month Eurogamer claimed to have word from three separate studios claiming to be working on the unit, but this new admission from Netherrealm is the first on-the-record evidence of the existence of the device.
