HMV calms Modern Warfare concerns

A mid-week release, the postal strikes – all the ingredients are there for a street-date break on Activision’s Modern Warfare 2, but retailer HMV has quashed rumours that it had been the first to move.

On Tuesday many HMV customers who had pre-ordered the game received emails from the retailer stating that their orders had been shipped. Gamers rejoiced, but fellow High Street competitors looked on anxiously concerned that the allegations could spark a retail free-for-all.

However, a spokesperson for HMV released the following statement to Eurogamer: HMV would never knowingly break a street date.”

Some customers may have received an email alert suggesting that the dispatch process is under way, but the stock has not yet been sent.

Fulfilling orders will obviously be a major undertaking, and in order to implement this in a timely manner, we have had to initiate the transaction process to begin printing off address labels. This has triggered the email alert, but stock has not been shipped.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is released worldwide on Tuesday November 10th. 2009 has been, on the whole, free of any notable street date breaks. Infinity Ward’s shooter will most likely be the biggest test of this resolve yet.
