Microsoft increases Xbox 360 price in India

Six years into a console’s life cycle, you’d expect hardware prices to be dropping, but in India, Microsoft has just increased the price of the Xbox 360.

An increase in prices for all three Xbox 360 SKUs has been conveyed to retailers, with prices going up from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. Here are the new prices, with the old prices in brackets:

  • Xbox 360 4 GB standalone console – Rs 15,990 (Rs 14,990)
  • Xbox 360 250 GB standalone console – Rs 24,990 (Rs 21,990)
  • Xbox 360 4 GB Kinect console bundle – Rs 26,990 (Rs 24,990)

To put things into perspective, the 250 GB console is now priced just Rs 3,000 less than the Xbox 360 Pro SKU (Rs 27,750) did at launch in 2006. That’s a 10 per cent drop over six years.

We’ve contacted Microsoft to understand the reasoning behind this price increase, but our money’s on the free-falling Rupee. We’ll update this story as we get an official response.
