New 2D Sonic in the works

Sega has confirmed that development is well underway on a brand new 2D Sonic title, which is currently going under the name Project Needlemouse.

Little is known about the game as of yet, though Sega’s associate brand manager Ken Balough told GameSpot that the game has been built from the ground up and will be fully HD – suggesting an Xbox 360 and PS3 release, possibly digitally.

He added that it has been designed with Sonic’s old-school” fanbase in mind.

The trailer, which can be seen below, carries the tag line Speed Returns” gives little away, though there are plenty of sound effects that fans of Sonic’s very first outing will recognise.
