Senator Leland Yee arrested by FBI

California State Senator Leland Lee, known for his legislative efforts to restrict minors’ access to violent video games, has been arrested by the FBI on charges of bribery and corruption.

NBC Bay Area and San Francisco’s KCRA are the first of several local outlets to cover the developing story – reporting that Yee’s office was raided by FBI agents this morning, with multiple arrest and search warrents in hand.

Ars Technica has gathered info from additional local sources that states the office raid follows a grand jury indictment of Yee, and that concurrent related raids are being conducted on Chinatown locations with possible drug and gang connections.

Yee is currently running for California Secretary of State. He was the main force behind the state’s ill-conceived 2005 law that sought to criminalize the sale of violent video games to children.

The law was permanently overturned by the US Supreme Court in 2011 on First Amendment grounds, after being struck down multiple times by various other court systems. The failed legislative and legal effort ended up costing California taxpayers $1.8m in attorney’s fees.
