Sony charging for PlayTV update

The next update to Sony’s PS3 digital TV peripheral PlayTV will be a premium download from PSN and not a free firmware upgrade.

Later this year a host of new features will be added to the PVR device including social networking platform Chat TV, a seven-day programme guide, new listings search functionality and Facebook recommendations.

The update will also add Series Link, which allows users to record every episode in any given TV series with a single button press, for the first time.

However, speaking on the PlayStation Blog PSN product manager James Thorpe added:

The development guys are constantly working hard to add as many new features as possible that have been requested across all markets. The new features in this update represent PlayStation’s strong community commitment. You will be able to get the software update on PS Store at a reasonable price. A lot of effort went into developing these features and they will make PlayTV a very unique product.”

MCV has contacted SCE UK for clarification.
