Sony making money on PS3 at last

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has stated that Sony is at last making money on each and every PS3 console that it sells.

This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3,” the exec told IGN. We aren’t making huge money from hardware, but we aren’t bleeding like we used to.”

The high RRP of PS3 has dogged the machine since its launch in 2006. The decision to include high-cost components such as Blu-ray and the Cell processor lead to the platform holder losing as much as $400 per machine in its early days according to the most extreme reports.

However, the flip-side of the new savings is that Sony’s delight at finally making some cold hard cash from each machine means the chances of hardware price drop are now slimmer than ever.

When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand,” he added. At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production.

We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don’t believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop.”
