The Angry Birds movie is official, set for 2016 release

A movie based on the Angry Birds franchise has been rumoured for a while, but Rovio has now finally made it official.

The animated flick will hit cinemas in 2016, and will be produced by John Cohen, who also produced Despicable Me.

Former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel, who stepped down following its acquisition by Disney, will serve as executive producer.

No cast has yet been announced, but Rovio has maintained that it will retail complete creative control over the film.

The announcement comes shortly after the three-year anniversary of the Angry Birds franchise, which comprises of five games that have been downloaded over 1 billion times.
