UK CHARTS: Resident Evil 5 fends off GTA

The ongoing success of Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 continues this week with the news that the next-gen survival horror shooter has claimed the top spot in the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 for the second week in a row.

It does so despite a 52 per cent drop in sales, and perhaps more interestingly, despite the release of Rockstar’s critically adored DS debut for its Grand Theft Auto series. Chinatown Wars manages only sixth place in the listings, selling around half the number of units that fellow handheld outing Vice City Stories did on PSP upon its release.

Nintendo’s Wii Fit holds firm in second place, with its puzzle adventure Professor Layton and the Curious Village improving on last weeks’ performance by one spot, climbing to third.

There’s also a strong debut for THQ’s WWE Legends of Wrestlemania, which arrives in fourth spot. Following some discounting, Capcom’s Street Fighter IV re-enters the top ten in seventh position.

Other new entries in the Top 40 this week include Sony’s SingStar Queen in 22nd, Ubisoft’s Scrabble Interactive: 2009 Edition at number 27 and Sega’s hardcore Wii title Madworld in 34th.

The ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 10 in full (for the week ending March 21st):

1. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom)
2. Wii Fit (Nintendo)
3. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo)

7. Street Fighter IV (Capcom)
8. Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training (Nintendo)
